SOPHIE LAM
Class of 2026
When I joined Cantabile in my junior year, I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I remember feeling a little nervous walking into my first rehearsal. From the beginning, though, everyone was so welcoming and genuine that I quickly felt like I belonged, even as someone new. Over these past two years, I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to perform music in many different languages and cultures, broadening my understanding of choral music and how I connect to it. I’ve also learned to approach each piece with greater intention, developing a deeper understanding of its meaning and how to communicate that through expression, something Elena consistently encouraged us to explore. That mindset has helped me grow both as a musician and as a more thoughtful and aware person.
What makes Cantabile so special to me is the way we connect through music. Being part of a group that’s so incredibly talented and dedicated has made my experience even more meaningful and inspiring. Even though my time in Cantabile was only two years, this community has had a lasting impact on me. I’ve grown in confidence, in musicality, and in how I connect with others. I’ll carry with me an appreciation for music across cultures, the importance of telling a story through what you create, and the experience of creating something together that no one could achieve alone.
