Spring Fever

Cantabile enrollment continues to grow

Cantabile begins spring semester with an influx of new singers, boosting enrollment to 140 members. Director Signe Boyer and Assistant Director Peggy Spool are busy preparing the seven groups for their various independent performing and training activities.

Chorus members, alumni, and their families attended a get-acquainted and/or meet-old-friends ice skating party/bake sale on February 3 at Palo Alto Winter Lodge.

On March 3 Signe Boyer directs Chamber Ensemble and members of the Concert Choir in a performance at the Ladera Church. The concert, "Songs of Joy and Laughter," is a benefit for the Spanish Speaking Chaplaincy Service at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.

Concert Choir and Level 3 will participate in a Choir Exchange with the Central Coast Children's Chorus on March 24 at St. Edward's Lutheran Church in San Jose. Cantabile and Central Coast choirs will sing for each other and perform some shared pieces as well. This event was arranged by Heritage Music Festival.

Peggy Spool's Preparatory, Level 1 and 2, and Intermediate Choirs will perform at the Euphrat Gallery on April 7. Cantabile choirs regularly participate in this annual "Family Arts Day" event.

Building to a climax

The semester will conclude with a flurry of performances. Concert Choir, Chamber Ensemble, and Level 3 will present their Spring Showcase Concert at Le Petit Trianon in San Jose on May 4. Chamber Ensemble will sing for a church service at Foothills Congregational on May 13. Prep, Intermediate, and Levels 1 & 2 will present their Spring Concert on May 16 at Immanuel Lutheran in Saratoga. Intermediate Choir will present an Atrium Concert at Stanford Hospital on May 23.

Finally, Chamber Ensemble will join the Baroque Choral Guild Chorus in the production of Bach's St. Matthew Passion on June 9 and 10 in Palo Alto and Berkeley.

Special weekend retreats are scheduled throughout the semester in preparation for all these performances. Signe Boyer and Peggy Spool direct Saturday workshops for their singers on January 27, February 3, March 3, and April 7. Cantabile's annual ice skating party/bake sale was in the early evening after the February 3 workshop.
