Cantabile's "Silver and Gold"
December concert features works by local composers
One doesn't have to travel far from home to hear good music by local composers. Cantabile Children's Chorus's December 10 concert, entitled "Silver and Gold," will feature works of Bay Area composers from San Jose to San Francisco. The program, directed by Signe Boyer and Peggy Spool, will highlight works by composers Brian Holmes of San Jose, Lorie Griswold of Mountain View, Sondra Clark of Los Altos, Nancy Bloomer Deussen of Palo Alto, and David Conte and Kirke Mechem of San Francisco.
Not strangers These composers are not new to Cantabile. In recent years the choir premiered Brian Holmes's "Pie Jesu," Nancy Bloomer Deussen's "Sing Nowell," and Sondra Clark's "Requiem for Lost Children." Composers had great praise for the young singers. Nancy Bloomer Deussen said "It was a great pleasure to compose 'Sing Nowell' for Cantabile Children's Chorus and to hear their wonderful rendition of it at the World Premiere." Sondra Clark added "I will always be indebted to Cantabile Children's Chorus for their amazing ability to master quickly the demanding music of my 'Requiem for Lost Children,' and to captivate the hearts of listeners and players alike with their pure, heavenly sound!"
Long association Brian Holmes has had a long association with Cantabile. In addition to teaching at San Jose State University, he finds time to compose and perform in local orchestras. While touring England two years ago, Cantabile was fortunate to have Mr. Holmes play the French horn accompaniment for the choir's premiere of his "Pie Jesu." A brass quintet will join Cantabile as they sing other works by Brian Holmes, as well as a "Julilate Deo" by Michael Braz. The choir sang Braz's Jubilate on last summer's tour to Italy where they participated in the Tuscany International Children's Choir Festival. Along with the contemporary works, Cantabile will perform works of the "old" masters such as Dufay and Bach.
