Baroque Choral Guild is pleased to announce the appointment of new Music Director Sanford Dole who will conduct the Guild's 22nd season. Dole succeeds Mitchell Covington, who resigned after a five-year tenure.
"There is a great camaraderie within the chorus and an obvious high level of skill and training," Dole said of Baroque Choral Guild, "I think we have a great deal to offer each other and I look forward to the opportunity to continue to bring great choral music to Bay Area audiences."
In addition to his new position as Music Director of the Guild Chorus, Dole is currently the Music Director at St. Gregory of Nyussa in San Francisco and a member of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Chorale, as well as director of the Sanford Dole Ensemble. He was a founding member of Chanticleer and served as Assistant Director of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus from 1987-97. A resident of San Francisco, Dole received his Bachelor and Master's degrees (in composition and conducting, respectively) at San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Dole was appointed in July, and his first task was to finalize details for the Guild's 2000-2001 season so that music could be ordered for rehearsals, which begin September 5.
The season opens in December with "Christmas at San Marco," a festive holiday concert of works by Venetian composers including Claudio Monteverdi, Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, Willaert, Merulo, and Bassano. Joining the Guild Chorus will be the period winds of The Whole Noyse.
The Guild's March a cappella concert, entitled "O sch?ne Nacht," promises a beautiful evening of German music spanning the centuries, including works by Heinrich Schütz, J.S. Bach, Johannes Brahms, Anton Brucker, Hugo Distler and others.
To conclude its 2000-2001 season, the Guild will perform J.S. Bach's magnificent Saint Matthew Passion. The Guild Chorus will be joined by Cantabile Children's Chorus, baroque orchestra Jubilate, and guest soloists featuring Brian Staufenbiel as Evangelist and David Newman as Jesus.
A subscription to the three 2000-2001 season concerts costs $40 (general) or $30 (student/senior). There is an order form inside, on page 3.
Concerts will be held in Palo Alto and in Berkeley. Saturday performances are at First United Methodist, Hamilton (at Webster) in Palo Alto. Sunday performances are at First Congregational, Dana (between Durant and Channing) in Berkeley.
Chorus rehearsals begin after Labor Day. Experienced singers who are interested in joining the Guild Chorus can phone the Guild office at (650) 424-1410 to schedule an audition.
