Baroque Record - 8.4 (May 2000)

Applause and accolade

The Bay Area offers such a plethora of arts and leisure choices that, for many small non-profit performing groups fighting for exposure and public awareness, this region is a place where seldom is heard an encouraging word.

Baroque Choral Guild was recently the grateful recipient of some encouraging words.  These are excerpts from a review of our March 12 Chansons concert (San Francisco Classical Voice, written by Kristi Brown):

"The Guild chorus sang with enthusiasm and impressive proficiency. ... As a whole ensemble, this chorus of over 50 singers dealt fairly well with the rapid-pace French pronunciation of these early chansons and demonstrated nimble and accurate singing without garbling the lightly polyphonic textures.  In one high point of the concert the chorus enchanted listeners with the well-tuned, articulated twitterings of the king thrush, the starling, the robin, the cuckoo, as well as the more elaborate descant of the nightingale."

And once again, the Guild received an unsolicited grant from the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation, accompanied by a brief letter that began  "We have enclosed our contribution check to Baroque Choral Guild..."  This is the third year that the Guild has been so honored, and this year the foundation increased its award from $1500 to $2000. The Guild is deeply grateful to the Getty Foundation for its continuing support.
