Cantabile's fall of fundraising and prep for guest appearance

Cantabile opened its fall season with a flurry of fundraising activities, especially as the singers look toward the summer of 2000 and their tour to Florence and Rome.

October events included fundraising night at Fresh Choice restaurant in Mountain View, and a Benefit Shopping Day at Macy's Valley Fair in San Jose.  Singers and their families got acquainted with each other while earning some monies for Cantabile's coffers at an ice skating party/pizza feed/bake sale held at Palo Alto's Winter Lodge.

In November singers and their parents will sell refreshments during Stanford football's Big Game against Cal and the final home game against Notre Dame.  After football season, Cantabile volunteers will sell refreshments at Stanford basketball games.

Many thanks to the stalwart parent volunteers who are commandeering these fundraising projects: Judy Blood, Yvonne Brill, Pat Lang, Cathy Sanocki, and Laurie Trescott.

Meanwhile, Music Director Signe Boyer has been preparing the singers for their November performance with the Peninsula Symphony.  Cantabile will participate in a special holiday concert at Stanford's Memorial Church with the Peninsula Symphony and the Stanford University Symphonic Chorale.  The program, conducted by Peninsula Symphony director Mitchell Klein, includes Dvorak's Serenade, Bernstein's Chichester Psalms and the world premiere of Brian Holmes's "Now is the Time."

Signe Boyer is excited about conducting Cantabile in the concert's opening piece "Carol of the Field Mice," which the singers will perform with organ accompaniment from the balcony of historic Memorial Church.

Because of this special engagement, Cantabile will not be presenting its own Christmas program but instead will perform a winter concert in January.  For details, see box above.
