Our 2001–2002 musical year began with the popular Cantabile summer music camp for young singers and our annual Peninsula Choral Workshop for high-school choristers, which culminated in a thrilling concert and individual recitals.
For the Guild Chorus, it was a season of stretching ourselves by learning a diverse, challenging, and ultimately rewarding set of choral pieces. Personal favorites included the men’s lush, blended performance of Poulenc’s Prayers, wonderful 20th-century pieces by Dutch composers Henk Badings and Ton de Leeuw, and the beauty of the resolution of Charles Ives’s Psalm 90. The spring Pipes and Drums concert also featured a memorable percussionist collaboration.
Cantabile gave a winter Water Journey concert, accompanied by a rainstorm, and several spring concerts.
The year also brought Audrey Wong’s long-planned retirement as executive director, our move into a real office, the addition of Cantabile parent Barbara Weinstein, to our board, the hiring of Sonja Wohlgemuth, who has jumped in with both feet as our new executive director, and the hiring of JoAnn diLorenzo, our new program manager. As Audrey would say, “Phew!”
We’re looking forward to exploring new repertoire and to European tours for both Cantabile and the Guild Chorus next summer. Come join us on our musical journeys!
